From 21 October 2024, the Medical Board of Australia launched the Expedited Specialist Pathway for internationally trained GPs. This pathway allows eligible GPs to apply directly for specialist registration without completing fellowship through RACGP or ACRRM. It includes a six-month supervised practice term and streamlined assessments.
This initiative addresses GP shortages in rural and regional Australia, while maintaining high standards of patient care.

This pathway is intended for Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) seeking specialist registration in Australia as GPs.
🎓 Am I eligible for the Expedited Specialist Pathway as a UK, Irish or NZ GP?
To be eligible for this pathway:
- You must hold a primary medical qualification in medicine and surgery recognised by both the AMC and the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).
- You must also hold a specialist GP qualification listed on the accepted qualifications list.

- 🇬🇧 UK: MRCGP with CCT (2007 onwards)
- 🇮🇪 Ireland: MICGP with CSCST (2009 onwards)

- This pathway leads directly to specialist registration with conditions.

1. Complete Primary Source Verification (PSV)
- Create an EPIC account
- Verify your credentials with AMC
- Upload documents and request your report to be sent to AMC
2. Apply for Specialist Registration
- Submit application via the AHPRA portal
- Choose:
- If no prior registration: Application for a medical specialist
- If currently registered: Application for additional specialty
- Submit required forms:
- Supervised Practice Plan (SPPA-00)
- Section G: Goals & Activities
- Pay the Medical Board fees

- Apply for:
- Medicare provider number
- PBS prescriber number
- Professional indemnity insurance

You'll need to complete six months of full-time equivalent supervised practice.
Requirements:
- Orientation to the Australian health system

- 50 hours of CPD annually:

- 12.5 flexible hours
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training (every 3 years)
