From 21 October 2024, the Medical Board of Australia opened the Expedited Specialist Pathway to internationally trained anaesthetists. This fast-tracked route allows eligible specialists to apply directly for specialist registration, with conditional approval subject to a six-month supervised practice and specific workplace-based assessments (WBAs).
This initiative aims to strengthen the anaesthetic workforce, especially in regional and tertiary hospitals across Australia.
👤 What is the Expedited Specialist Pathway for Anaesthetists?
This pathway is designed for Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) seeking to practise as anaesthetists in Australia without undergoing fellowship with ANZCA.
🎓 Am I eligible as an Anaesthetist trained overseas?
To be eligible, you must:
- Hold a primary medical degree recognised by the AMC and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).
- Hold a specialist anaesthesia qualification listed on the accepted qualifications list.
Examples include:
- 🇬🇧 UK: FRCA + CCT
- 🇮🇪 Ireland: FCAI + CCT
- 🇳🇿 NZ: FANZCA-equivalent
🩺 Do I need general registration first?
No. Under this pathway, you can apply directly for specialist registration. The Medical Board will impose conditions until supervised practice and assessment are successfully completed.
📋 How do I verify my anaesthesia qualifications?
Step 1: Primary Source Verification
- Create an EPIC account
- Verify both primary and specialist qualifications via AMC
- Submit original Certificates of Registration Status (CORS) directly from issuing authority
Step 2: Apply to the College and AHPRA
- Submit SIMG application + CV + CORS + English language proof
- Include employment history, CPD evidence, passport and change of name documentation if applicable
- Pay SIMG assessment fee (combined if applying for pain medicine too)
💼 What documents are required for anaesthetists applying through ANZCA?
- Application for recognition as a specialist
- College-formatted CV
- Primary and specialist degree verification (via AMC)
- CPD records (last 3 years)
- CORS + passport + English language test (or exemption)
- Application for position approval (if applicable)

🧪 What is the Individual Program after interview?
Once assessed, SIMGs may receive an Individual Program requiring:
- Clinical Practice Assessment (CPA)
- Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises (EMAC)
- Multisource Feedback (MSF)
- CPD compliance
- Final Exam or Performance Assessment
Some SIMGs may also be required to complete a Patient Clinical Interaction Assessment (PCIA).
📅 Supervised Practice and Return to Practice
- Supervision lasts 6 months full-time equivalent
- May include additional time if returning from absence over 12 months
- Orientation + cultural safety education mandatory
- Recency of practice is reviewed for safe re-entry into the workforce

You’ll complete:
- MSF via CFEP ($495 AUD)
- One of:
- Mini-CEX
- DOPS
- CBD
