About this role

Consultant/Specialist locum covering mixed obstetrics and general gynaecology workload at a Level 5 maternity service, including antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal care and gynaecology patients

Department Overview & Scope

We are a Level 5 maternity service providing obstetric care from 32 weeks’ gestation onwards, alongside a general gynaecology service. The department manages a mixed workload of obstetric and gynaecological patients.

Capacity & Activity

  • Approximately 1,600 deliveries per year
  • 13 inpatient beds
  • 6 labour rooms
  • 2 triage rooms

Gynaecology patients are admitted under the surgical ward and occasionally the medical ward.

Typical Workflow / Case Mix

  • Obstetric care including antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal management
  • EPAS (Early Pregnancy Assessment Service) runs on weekdays during business hours
  • Day Assessment Unit manages non-labouring women until 17:00; after hours, patients present to Labour Ward
  • Gynaecology patients are primarily assessed via ED in conjunction with the O&G registrar

Team Structure & Support

  • 4 Consultants with 24-hour on-call support
  • 6–8 registrars (including 1–2 trainees and unaccredited registrars)
  • 2 SRMOs and resident medical officers
  • Midwifery-led unit supported by NUM and experienced nursing staff
  • On-site obstetric registrar at all times
  • Paediatric registrar on-site
  • Anaesthetic registrar available off-site overnight (on-call)

The department is consultant-led with strong registrar and junior support.

Key Information for Locums

  • Rosters are provided in advance by Medical Administration
  • If rostered to Labour Ward, please attend handover at 08:00 and evening handover as scheduled
  • For antenatal clinics, handover occurs at 08:30 in Hub 3, with clinics running from 09:00 to 16:30
  • Assessment Unit shifts involve reviewing patients and following evidence-based management protocols

First Day / Orientation

  • Please report to Labour Ward on your first day unless otherwise advised
  • Orientation materials and a handover booklet are available in Labour Ward
  • Medical Administration will advise where to collect access cards/keys and provide initial contacts
  • SRMOs, residents, and the team are happy to assist with orientation, including showing key areas such as Theatre, ED, and outpatient clinics

Additional Support

  • Senior registrars (Dr Darshana and Dr Samit) coordinate rostering and are available for support
  • The team is approachable and supportive, and we aim to provide a welcoming environment for all locums
